Gudauri Winter Guide

When the season starts, what mountain weather changes, how to dress and how to plan each ski day more intelligently.

Snow-covered mountain panorama in Gudauri

A Gudauri winter is less about a fixed calendar and more about snow, wind and altitude. The resort usually operates through the core winter months and can continue well into spring, but opening dates and terrain availability depend on snow coverage and weather.

For reference, the 2025–26 season opened key Gudauri lifts from 27 December and the season continued through 19 April. Treat those dates as a recent example, not a promise for the next winter.

When to come

Late December and early January bring a festive atmosphere but also the highest demand. January and February are classic ski months, while March often combines longer daylight with good mountain coverage. Spring skiing can continue into April when conditions allow.

If you care more about quieter slopes than holiday atmosphere, avoid the busiest New Year dates.

Lift hours and daily planning

Lift hours are published by the Mountain Trails Agency and can change during the season. In the 2025–26 season, Gudauri lifts generally operated from 10:00 to 17:00 once open.

Check lift status every morning before making a plan. Wind can affect higher lifts even when the weather feels calm at your apartment.

What to wear

Use layers rather than one extremely heavy item: breathable base layer, insulating mid-layer and waterproof outer shell. Add helmet, goggles, gloves and neck protection. Carry sunscreen even on cold days — UV exposure is stronger at altitude and reflected by snow.

Lessons, rentals and first days

Book lessons and rental equipment before high-demand dates. If you are a beginner, plan your first day around technique rather than sightseeing. Familiarity with stopping and turning will make the rest of the holiday safer and more enjoyable.

Avalanche and off-piste safety

Gudauri is famous for freeride terrain, but fresh snow does not automatically mean safe snow. Official tourism guidance explicitly warns visitors to pay attention to avalanche alerts. Never treat unmarked terrain as an extension of the piste map without the right knowledge and equipment.

Winter activities beyond skiing

Snowmobiles, ice skating and paragliding can complement a ski holiday. Paragliding in particular depends heavily on visibility, wind and snowfall, so keep it flexible.
